Project Description

here:me (graffiti at Flint Ink)

Flint Ink was a multi-building ink manufacturing facility in Berkeley, California that sat unused for many years until purchased by Orton Development.  The graffiti inside represents several generations of artists interacting with each other and the world on the abandoned walls and surfaces of the campus’s many buildings.  I was invited to document these walls before renovation; some of the original graffiti was preserved and can be seen in the resident businesses.  The layering of image, text, and aging walls reveals an intense creativity among a generation who may otherwise feel unheard and unvalued.  I found it intensely beautiful and moving.
