Places on the Way

We are goal oriented people. We take freeways and highways to our destinations, often missing the richness of places along the way. In this series, as I traveled between National Parks and National Wildlife Refuges, small towns and abandoned ranches along the roads drew me in. Back roads beckoned. There I found history and humor, and rejoiced in being away from the traffic and the crowds of the more famous locations in the desert Southwest.
